I have always worked at edges. Not usually dramatic ones - the line where a boulevard becomes a beach, where a city stops and a river starts, where a landscape becomes too dry to live in, where daylight gives out. And, in the documentary work, the less visible edges: the ones history drew between places that share a name and nothing else

Black and white urban landscapes made in a city with no old centre. Concrete, steel and cable at a scale that reduces the people moving through it to marks — and the moments when the built city and the river briefly agree on something.

Black and white work from the semi-desert basin held between the Langeberg and the Swartberg. A landscape defined by what it does not have, where a single telegraph pole carries the weight a tower carries in a city.

I shot these portraits in Karatara, I small town near Knysna in the Western Cape, South Africa. The houses were built for a community of woodcutters when they were forced to stop working within the surrounding indigenous forest.
